Authorities probing suspected illegal human trafficking operation - Authorities are examining potential human trafficking networks
In a joint statement issued by the police and prosecutors, it has been confirmed that an investigation is ongoing into a suspected human smuggling ring based in Menden, Sauerland region. The operation, which began in the course of another case, has led to the detention of two main suspects: a 26-year-old Iraqi and a 20-year-old Syrian, both last residing in Menden.
Clues about human smuggling emerged during the investigation of the main suspect, the 26-year-old Iraqi. These clues were extensively corroborated throughout the investigation, leading to the accusation that the suspects were smuggling foreign nationals into Germany from their last known residence in Menden.
The investigation has revealed that the human smuggling operation involved trips from Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, and Poland to Germany. Nine trips, typically from Croatia via Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, and Poland, have been confirmed during the period from September 2023 to April 2024.
Five Germans and one Italian, aged between 21 and 39, are suspected of acting as transporters in the human smuggling operation. The suspects are accused of repeatedly smuggling foreign nationals.
Most of the 88 smuggled individuals have been identified, although the exact number may still change as the investigation continues. The police and prosecutors have not yet released any information about what they discovered during the investigation before detaining the main suspect.
The investigation is ongoing, with the suspects in custody. The public is reminded that this is an active case, and further details may be released as the investigation progresses.
