Authorities in Australia dispatch drones and a helicopter in response to a surfer being fatally attacked by a great white shark near a Sydney beach.
In a shocking incident, a 57-year-old experienced surfer lost his life in a shark attack at Sydney's Long Reef Beach on September 7, 2025. The attack, which took place approximately 100m from shore, marks a tragic event that has not been seen in Sydney since 1963.
Forensic analysis and expert assessments by New South Wales government biologists suggest that the attack was almost certainly caused by a great white shark, commonly known as a White Shark or White Pointer, approximately 3.4 to 4 meters in length. This is based on the bite marks found on the surfboard.
The victim, who was surfing at the time of the attack, suffered severe injuries and unfortunately died at the scene. The loss of blood due to the attack proved to be fatal.
Yesterday's incident marks the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia in 2025. Australia ranks behind only the United States in the number of unprovoked shark bites on humans in 2024.
In response to the incident, Australian authorities deployed drones and a helicopter to monitor the waters around Long Reef Beach in Sydney. Surf Life Saving NSW also deployed drones and a helicopter to surveil the area for the shark.
Following the attack, two beaches in Sydney have been closed. Additionally, more so-called SMART drumlines have been installed in the area to help deter sharks.
This tragic event unfortunately follows another shark attack that occurred in March, where a surfer was killed by a shark in shallow water on a remote beach in Western Australia.
The University of Florida's International Shark Attack File reported this information. The community is urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines when in the water, especially during times when shark activity is high.
Our thoughts go out to the victim's family and friends during this difficult time.
