Investigators Examine Terror Ties in Connection to Youth's Brutal Attack in İzmir, Alleged to be Radicalized

Authorities inspect potential terrorist associations in the wake of a violent attack perpetrated by a radicalized adolescent in Izmir.

In the heart of Izmir, Turkey, a tragic incident unfolded on September 8, 2021, as a 16-year-old named E.B. launched an attack on a local police station. The attack resulted in the loss of two police officers and left the city in shock.

According to investigations, E.B. had made ominous statements indicating his intentions before the attack, claiming he would become a "martyr." The motive behind the attack is believed to be radicalization linked to extremist Islamist groups.

Authorities detained E.B. following the attack and have since been investigating potential connections to terrorism. Prosecutors are examining a possible direct organizational link to terrorism, but details regarding this are yet to be confirmed.

In the aftermath of the attack, 27 individuals were detained, including a 32-year-old Iranian national residing in Istanbul. These individuals are thought to have been in contact with E.B., but there is currently no information available about their connection to the perpetrator or the attack.

Separately, Istanbul police detained 19 ISIL suspects in an operation, although authorities have not yet directly linked this to the Izmir assault.

Social media accounts linked to E.B. revealed posts glorifying groups affiliated with the ISIL terrorist organization. E.B.'s father also reported that his son's behaviour had become erratic in the days leading up to the attack, with him visiting strange websites, praying constantly, and making statements that his family were infidels.

Prosecutors are also investigating whether the attack was solely due to individual radicalization or if E.B. had ties to ISIL or another militant network. The other nine individuals detained in connection with the investigation were found to have engaged in pro-organizational social media activity, disseminating ISIL propaganda and using digital applications employed for internal communications within the group.

However, there are no search results providing information about these 27 people detained in connection with the attack in Izmir or their connection to the perpetrator. Prosecutors are continuing their investigations to uncover the full extent of any potential organizational links to terrorism.
