Authorities seek individuals who observed the incident
In the early hours of August 1, 2023, a significant fire broke out in an underground garage located on Luisenhüttenstraße in Lünen, Dortmund.
The incident was first reported by witnesses around 5:30 a.m., who noticed smoke and flames emanating from the underground garage. Residents also reported seeing a burning trash can before the arrival of firefighters and police.
By the time emergency services arrived, the fire had already engulfed the entire underground garage, with flames reaching several meters out of the ventilation shafts. The fire was so intense that it completely destroyed the garage, and two cars parked above it were also burned to the ground.
As a result of the fire, one person sustained minor injuries from the smoke, and three individuals required treatment. Forty-two people, including the injured, were examined by the emergency medical services as a precaution.
In response to the fire, four adjacent residential buildings were evacuated due to the strong smoke. A bus was provided for the evacuated residents.
The Dortmund Police are seeking witnesses regarding the fire incident and are particularly interested in any observations around 5:30 a.m. that could be related to the fire's origin. The Criminal Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be in the millions, and up to 15 vehicles parked in the garage may have been damaged.
