European Car Market Shows Shift Towards Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)
Automobile market in Europe shifts towards hybrid vehicles as electric vehicle sales slow down.
In the first quarter of 2024, the European car market has witnessed a significant shift in demand towards Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The trend is evident in the total car registrations, which reached 3,380,048 units, a 4.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
Among the HEVs, self-charging vehicles that use an internal combustion engine (ICE) and regenerative braking to charge the batteries have been gaining popularity. According to JATO, these vehicles are more reliable and 27% cheaper than electric vehicles (EVs) on average.
The surge in demand for HEVs can be attributed to high prices and fading government subsidies for EVs. This has caused a drop in overall car registrations, which includes both legacy Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Chinese manufacturers. JATO notes that this drop in registrations is not exclusive to the EV segment but affects the market as a whole.
Toyota, a leading player in the HEV market, was the market leader in Europe for hybrid electric vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2024. The Toyota Prius HEV, featured in the main photo of this article, has been a key contributor to Toyota's success.
Other manufacturers have also seen a boost in HEV sales. Volvo witnessed a 70% increase in registrations, boosted by the EX30. BMW experienced a 60% year-on-year increase in EV registrations, which includes HEVs.
The Volkswagen Golf was the second most registered car in Europe in March, with volumes increasing by 43%. Interestingly, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 remained the first and third most registered EVs in Europe, respectively. However, Tesla's registrations dropped 36% compared to last year, and its share in the BEV market plunged to 19.9% in March 2024 from 27.8% in the same month the previous year.
The rise in HEV sales has not been limited to Europe. Chinese EVs represented 6.1% of the total all-electric BEVs in March 2024. Sales of China-made EVs increased by 0.7% in March 2024, with 33,000 units delivered.
Despite the surge in HEV sales, the overall car market in Europe faced challenges. Total car registrations in March 2024 were 2.7% lower than last year. The European new car market issues also affected Chinese manufacturers, which faced an anti-subsidy inquiry.
In conclusion, the first quarter of 2024 has seen a shift in demand towards HEVs in Europe. With HEVs hitting the highest quarterly registrations since 2021, reaching 328,700 registrations between January and March 2024, it seems that this trend is here to stay.
