Autonomous buses shifting from futuristic melodies to daily commuting in public transit systems
In the heart of Germany, two cities โ Friedrichshafen and Mannheim โ are leading the way in the realm of autonomous public transport. The RABus research project, currently underway in these cities, is investigating the feasibility of autonomous buses for urban and rural public transport.
The project, a real-world laboratory for automated bus operation, has already seen autonomous minibuses navigating cities and countryside in both locations. The focus is on evaluating the shuttle service provided by these self-driving vehicles, as well as investigating their functionality in traffic, passenger acceptance, and impact on traffic patterns.
The RABus project, initiated by the city of Mรผnster, aims to provide valuable insights into the practical application of autonomous buses in public transport. The project is open to anyone, with the option to subscribe for a yearly fee of โฌ96 (including VAT). However, detailed information about other participating cities, the renewal process for the subscription, and the benefits or features included in the subscription are not currently available.
If you already have a subscription, you can log in to access the service. For those interested in special conditions, there's an option for a non-binding inquiry. To request an offer, simply click on "Request offer now".
Autonomous buses, as part of the RABus project, have demonstrated technical functionality and passenger acceptance. As the project continues, it will be interesting to see how these self-driving vehicles shape the future of public transport in Germany and beyond.
