Autonomous ride service by Waymo now offers pre-arranged scheduling

Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced a significant update to its user experience. The company, which is currently in early testing in Dallas, Texas, plans to launch its robotaxi service in the city in 2026, following a partnership with Avis Budget Group.

This latest development comes as Waymo positions itself at the forefront of the burgeoning autonomous driving space. The company's existing operations in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin have already logged millions of rider-only miles.

One of the key features of the updated Waymo app is the ability for users to schedule autonomous robotaxi rides in advance. This means that customers can now pre-book their Waymo rides, whether for an early morning airport trip, a scheduled meeting, or ensuring a ride is ready when needed.

This new feature brings the autonomous service closer to matching and, in some ways, surpassing the experience of traditional ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft. Users can now set a pickup time for their autonomous robotaxi rides, making transportation planning more convenient.

In addition to this, Waymo has also introduced the option for riders to request a ride at a specific time, giving them more control over their transportation. This feature allows users to plan their trips with Waymo on their preferred schedule, whether it's days or even weeks in advance.

Waymo's evolution of its user experience indicates its intentions to keep adapting as robotaxi adoption and competition expand in the coming years. The company's recent approval to test autonomous vehicles in New York City, although commercial robotaxi rides are not allowed yet, is a testament to this commitment. The approval for testing in New York City is limited to controlled testing for now.
