Waymo Expands Autonomous Ride-Hailing Services to San José Mineta International Airport

Waymo, the self-driving technology company originally born in Silicon Valley, is set to expand its autonomous ride-hailing services to San José Mineta International Airport (SJC). This marks a significant step towards providing a new, innovative, dependable, and convenient travel option to and from SJC for passengers.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved Waymo to operate autonomous ride-hailing services at SJC, making it the first commercial airport in California to authorise Waymo services.

The deployment of Waymo's autonomous vehicles at SJC will occur in stages, starting with testing rides for Waymo employees. A public launch of the service is scheduled for later in the year.

Initially, onward journeys offered by Waymo will be within its existing San Francisco Bay Area service area. However, Waymo's expansion aims to provide a valuable service to travellers in San José and more of the Bay Area.

San José, being the Capital of Silicon Valley, is an ideal location for Waymo's autonomous vehicles. The city's technological prowess and forward-thinking approach make it the perfect testbed for Waymo's self-driving technology.

Waymo's autonomous vehicles will become operational in conjunction with the biggest sporting events of 2026 in San José. This will provide a much-needed transport solution for the influx of visitors expected during these events.

Passengers traveling through SJC will be able to book a Waymo vehicle using the Waymo app. Pick-up points for Waymo vehicles will be located at the airport's Ground Transportation Centers in Terminals A and B.

In the future, Waymo aims to offer fully autonomous rides at SJC terminals. This expansion of Waymo's services is a step towards expanding its autonomous ride-hailing services across the Bay Area.

By keeping innovation on the move, Waymo's autonomous vehicles are poised to revolutionise transportation in the Bay Area, making travel to and from SJC more efficient, accessible, and sustainable.
