Schleswig-Holstein Landtag President Proposes Sports Competitions for Baltic Sea Youth

Kristina Herbst, the newly appointed Landtag President of Schleswig-Holstein, has put forward a new initiative to organize sports competitions for youth from the Baltic Sea coastal states. This proposal, which is not related to the transfer of the presidency of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC), was first reported by the "Bild" newspaper.

The BSPC is a platform for dialogue between the parliaments of the Baltic Sea coastal states. The conference, which was held in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands this year, marks the transfer of the conference presidency to the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag following its conclusion on Tuesday. The Åland Islands Parliament's representative, Alfons Röblom, previously held the chairmanship of the BSPC.

Herbst sees the Baltic Sea region as offering diverse opportunities for sporting competitions, particularly involving water activities. She has expressed her intention to approach schools and clubs regarding the proposed sports competitions, which include sailing, rowing, beach volleyball, and beach soccer.

The proposed sports competitions aim to instill values such as fairness, respect, and the willingness to adhere to rules in participating youth. However, it's important to note that these values are not directly linked to the proposal, as previously reported.

Herbst's proposal is part of her vision for a joint, peaceful, and democratic Europe. The sports competitions are not directly related to the conclusion of this year's BSPC in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands.

Unfortunately, at this time, there is no information available regarding the name of the person who will take over the presidency of the BSPC this year.

The BSPC is a valuable forum for dialogue and cooperation between the parliaments of the Baltic Sea coastal states. Under Herbst's leadership, it's expected that the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag will continue to foster these relationships and promote initiatives like the proposed sports competitions.
