Aviation history marks a 30-year milestone with a takeoff for Soho airport
The historic moment has arrived as the first civilian flight in modern history from Sukhumi, a city in Abkhazia, took off today, May 1st. This significant event marks the reopening of the Sukhumi International Airport, which had been closed since 1993.
The flight, currently in progress, is expected to arrive at its destination at 18:26. The journey, however, has not been without a minor hiccup. The flight was delayed by 17 minutes at Vnukovo Airport before taking off.
The reconstruction of the airport, named after Vladislav Ardzinba, began in 2023. The Russian Ministry of Defense has been instrumental in coordinating and supporting the reopening of the airport. The first test flight took place on February 7 of this year.
Photographer Thomas Tkhaitsuk is documenting this historic event, capturing the moments that mark the return of air travel to Sukhumi.
As of today, flights to Abkhazia will be operated from Moscow, Krasnoyarsk, and Nizhny Novgorod. Efforts are also underway to establish air communication with Ufa and Kazan as well, further expanding the reach of air travel in the region.
The Sukhumi International Airport is now operational, serving flights from the mentioned cities. This development is expected to boost tourism and economic growth in the region, providing a much-needed impetus for its development.
