New President of UN General Assembly Sworn In

Annalena Baerbock, a German politician, was officially sworn in as the President of the United Nations General Assembly on September 9, 2025, in New York. This historic moment marks Baerbock as the fifth woman to hold this prestigious position.

During her swearing-in ceremony, Baerbock placed her hand on the original UN Charter, signifying her commitment to uphold the principles and values of the United Nations. In her first speech as President, she emphasized the need for the UN to fulfill its promises and demonstrate its relevance in the face of ongoing conflicts around the world.

Baerbock's election was met with an overwhelming majority, despite a reported attempt at interference from Russia. Her term as President will last for one year, during which she will chair the General Assembly's sessions and manage its agenda, including the General Debate in late September.

In her role, Baerbock will be separate from the UN Secretary-General, AntΓ³nio Guterres, who expressed his eagerness to work with her. Baerbock tested the gavel, used to open and close sessions, during her first session, symbolising her official assumption of duties.

Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, served as the previous President of the UN General Assembly. Yang bid farewell to his role, marking the end of his tenure.

Baerbock acknowledged the ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world, such as Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Haiti, and expressed the need to show the world why the UN is still relevant. She aims to deliver a speech during her first session, outlining her vision and plans for her term as President.

The role of the President of the UN General Assembly is primarily ceremonial, but the decisions made by the General Assembly often have more symbolic value and serve as a global barometer of opinion. Baerbock's leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective and renewed focus to the United Nations' mission.
