Baidu strengthens presence in Chinese artificial intelligence sector via Ernie 4.0 update

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), Chinese tech giants are making significant strides. Baidu, a leading name in the industry, has been at the forefront of these advancements.

Recently, Baidu introduced the upgraded PaddlePaddle 3.0 deep learning platform. This platform features an auto-parallel architecture, compiler optimisation, and multi-hardware compatibility, aiming to boost performance and deliver optimal outcomes for large models. The platform supports over 14 million developers and 370,000 businesses and institutions.

Baidu's AI model, Ernie, exemplifies the company's shift towards an AI-first business model. Ernie has been integrated into the devices and services of tech giants like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Nio, and is also available on Samsung Electronics' flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone series in China. Ernie Bot, Baidu's generative AI product, boasts over 300 million users in China, handling approximately 500 million queries daily.

Ernie Bot is claimed to be on par with OpenAI's GPT-4, a significant achievement for Baidu. However, OpenAI's decision to block access to its services from mainland China starting July 9, 2024, will impact numerous Chinese enterprises leveraging OpenAI's technology.

In response, Baidu announced the upgraded Ernie 4.0 Turbo model on June 28, promising faster responses and superior performance. This move comes after Chinese regulators instructed domestic companies not to offer the ChatGPT service in February 2023, citing concerns over the AI-powered chatbot's uncensored replies. Tech companies in China are required to report to regulators before launching similar services.

Amidst these developments, Apple is reportedly in discussions with Baidu for a similar arrangement with its iPhone series. The details of this potential collaboration have not been disclosed.

In the first quarter of 2024, Baidu reported revenue of RMB 31.5 billion (USD 4.3 billion) and a net profit (non-GAAP) of RMB 7.011 billion (USD 970 million), marking a 22% year-on-year increase. Co-founder, chairman, and CEO Robin Li emphasised Baidu's pivot from an internet-centric business to an AI-driven enterprise as reflective of Baidu's long-term vision and strategic direction during the Q1 2024 earnings call.

As Baidu continues to lead the AI race in China, the future of AI-driven enterprises in the country looks promising.
