In a recent development, the public prosecutor's office in Berlin has announced charges against a second suspect in connection to an ATM heist that occurred in April 2024. The suspect, a 38-year-old man, is accused of causing an explosion and aggravated theft, with the stolen amount totalling 255,480 euros.

The alleged crime took place at the CharitΓ© Campus Virchow Clinic in Wedding, where the men are suspected to have introduced a highly explosive gas mixture into the ATM. The explosion occurred shortly after, damaging the machine and allowing the suspects to make off with the stolen cash.

Initially, the two men fled the scene on a motor scooter. However, their getaway took a tragic turn when their small rubber boat with an outboard motor capsized near the Old Lock in Charlottenburg. In the ensuing chaos, one of the men drowned.

The other man managed to swim to the shore and fled to the Netherlands, leaving the 38-year-old suspect as the only individual currently facing charges. It is reported that the man was arrested and extradited to Berlin in May 2025, after being apprehended in Spain.

Interestingly, the man had already been sentenced to eight years in prison by the Cologne Regional Court in 2018 for several ATM explosions. The man arrested in Spain in May 2025, who was subsequently extradited to Berlin, is Rachid A., a known figure in the ATM bombing cases.

The exact details of the investigation and the evidence leading to the charges against the 38-year-old suspect have not been disclosed. The case is ongoing, and the public prosecutor's office has urged anyone with information relevant to the investigation to come forward.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and consequences associated with such criminal activities. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The Berlin police have assured the public that they are committed to bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice.
