Bank employee impersonation under investigation in Meckenheim: Criminal authorities probe alleged deceit, urging public vigilance against financial fraud

Bonn Police Warn Public About "Fake Bank Employee" Scam

The Criminal Investigation Department 24 of the Bonn Police is currently investigating several cases of fraud, where perpetrators have deceived victims by impersonating bank employees. In these cases, the fraudsters have contacted victims by phone, claiming there are high payment demands or suspicious activities on their accounts.

In one instance, the fraudsters used the stolen card for cash withdrawals. However, in two cases in Wertheim, the perpetrators went a step further. They pretended to be employees of Volksbank Tauberbischofsheim, using Call ID Spoofing to make victims believe they were speaking with bank representatives. This deception led to theft of several thousand euros from the victims' accounts.

The Bonn Police are urging the public to be vigilant and suspicious of all calls, as fraudsters use various methods to obtain money and valuables. Here are some tips to protect yourself:

  1. Do not let yourself be pressured into anything over the phone. End the call by hanging up or pressing the appropriate button on your phone.
  2. Do not provide any information about your financial situation over the phone.
  3. Do not reveal any bank data, access data, or passwords during a call.
  4. Immediately inform the police via 110 after hanging up.
  5. Never hand over money or valuables to strangers.
  6. Do not let strangers into your home.

If you suspect a call might be fraudulent, hang up and contact your bank directly using the official phone number on your bank's official website or the back of your bank card. Remember, your bank will never ask for your PIN number or other sensitive information over the phone.

The Bonn Police have issued a warning about this scam, reminding the public to stay cautious and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. By following these simple tips, you can protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud. Stay safe and secure!
