Bats Trespass on the Railway Line

Bats, often considered 'scary' creatures of the night, are among the most fascinating animals in the world. This September, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) is hosting BatNight, a nationwide event aimed at educating the public and dispelling myths about these intriguing creatures.

The declining insect populations, due to land sealing and extensive agriculture, have led to food scarcity for bats. These nocturnal creatures play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, feeding on nuisance insects such as mosquitoes, spiders, and forest pests like beetles.

To attract these insects and support bat populations, creating multi-year flower meadows can be beneficial. This not only benefits bats but also contributes to a more diverse and thriving ecosystem.

In Haigerloch, Zollernalbkreis, NABU is working on a special project, "Livingspace Church Tower," to protect an endangered bat species. A local church tower serves as a home to a colony of around 600 bats. Seeking advice during renovations on how to maintain space for bats can contribute to the conservation of these important creatures.

During BatNight, NABU will provide tips on how individuals can live more bat-friendly lives. The organization will also organise nationwide guided tours, excursions, and exhibitions to offer a closer look at the world of bats.

To locate bats, NABU uses a 'bat detector.' These devices can pick up the high-frequency calls that are usually inaudible to the human ear.

Bats are increasingly threatened, with their habitats under pressure. In Germany alone, there are over 25 species of bats. It is crucial that we take steps to protect these vital creatures and ensure their survival for future generations.

Join NABU this September for BatNight and discover the wonders of bats. Together, we can make a difference in the conservation of these fascinating animals.
