THW Deploys Oil Spill Combat Unit in Augsburg Amid Flooding Crisis

In response to the ongoing flooding crisis in Bavaria, a special oil spill combat unit from the Technical Relief Organization (THW) will be deployed in the district of Augsburg today. This is part of a larger operation that is expected to continue throughout the week.

The THW, a federally funded operational organization with a commitment of around 88,000 volunteers nationwide, has been playing a crucial role in the region. Their expertise, technology, and experience have been instrumental in civil protection tasks, both domestically and internationally.

Early this morning, THW forces evacuated the district of Baar-Ebenhausen at 3 a.m., using vehicles capable of crossing flooded roads and waters. Residents were asked to leave their homes via loudspeaker announcements.

The THW Bavaria's oil separation process is significant for environmental protection and cost savings. They are able to separate oil from water using special facilities, reducing special waste by around 90%. The treated water is then disposed of appropriately.

Heavy rain is expected in Bavaria today, and its impact on water levels is uncertain. Further settlements in Bavaria, including Pfaffenhofen, are expected to be evacuated due to flooding. THW forces from Obernburg, Hof, and Schwandorf will prepare oil-contaminated water in Augsburg.

In Vohburg, high-performance pumps have already been put into operation by the THW to lower water levels. The organization aims to protect downstream settlements from further flooding, working alongside other deployment forces.

The THW assists in bilateral aid, the European Union's civil protection mechanism, and UN organizations. Their efforts in Bavaria are a testament to their commitment to helping communities in need.
