Bayern Munich emerged victorious over Bayer Leverkusen in a double-header, setting a new record for spectators in attendance
In the opening match of the Women's Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich secured a 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena. The match, attended by 57,762 spectators, including football celebrities, saw a series of exciting moments.
The first half of the game was dominated by Leverkusen, who presented a secure defensive performance and showed playful offensive moves. Carlotta Wamser, from the right defence, initiated many of Leverkusen's attacks. However, chances were scarce for Bayern, with national striker Lea Schüller missing an early opportunity to score in the second minute, putting the ball wide. Ruby Grant also missed Leverkusen's best chance after 20 minutes.
The match turned in Bayern's favour in the second half. New Bayern coach José Barcala, visibly frustrated with his team's performance before the break, saw his side improve significantly after the interval. The turning point came in the 76th minute when Vanessa Gilles scored the first goal, assisted by Klara Bühl. Bühl then scored the second goal shortly afterwards, volleying a corner kick from Gilles into the net.
Bühl's introduction as a substitute for Schüller brought more freshness and pace to Bayern's game, and she also contributed to the first goal by assisting Gilles. Jovana Damnjanovic hit the crossbar after 68 minutes, but it was too little, too late for Leverkusen.
Giulia Gwinn, Bayern's injured player, stated that the team wasn't performing as expected. She attributed the team's initial struggles to the pressure of playing in front of such a large crowd. Lilla Turanyi had a penalty denied due to a shirt pull from Magdalena Eriksson, but overall, Bayern Munich managed to hold on to their lead and secure the victory.
With this win, Bayern Munich have made a strong start to their Women's Bundesliga campaign, and they will be looking to build on this result as they continue their quest for success in the league.
