Bayern THW commemorates its 75-year milestone, reflecting on its significant role in safeguarding the populace, recalling an emotional history.
In the heart of Munich, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a special reception today, honouring around 350 members of the THW (Technisches Hilfswerk), as the organisation celebrates its 75th anniversary. Established on August 22, 1950, by key figures Gustav Heinemann and Otto Lummitzsch, the THW has grown from humble beginnings to become a vital force in emergency response and civil protection.
The THW's roots in Bavaria can be traced back to the local association in Nuremberg, founded in 1950. Today, around 16,000 volunteers dedicate their free time to the THW across 111 local associations in the region, with only around 300 people working for the THW full-time.
The THW's mission is multifaceted, providing specialist knowledge and diverse experiences to fire services, police, aid organizations, and more. This versatility has made the THW a sought-after supporter in various emergency situations. Over the years, the THW has expanded its competencies, particularly in emergency supply and emergency restoration, following events such as the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The THW's global reach is evident in its deployments on behalf of the federal government, including technical and logistical aid within the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism and on behalf of UN organizations. The THW's first foreign mission was a storm surge in the Netherlands in 1953, and since then, it has been deployed worldwide.
The THW has also responded to climate change effects, such as the flood disaster in southern Bavaria caused by the low pressure system "Orinoco" in 2021. In response to Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, the civil defense capabilities of the THW have regained significance.
The THW in Bavaria has specialized forces for foreign deployments, capable of treating contaminated drinking water and pumping out water at up to 15,000 liters per minute in flooded areas. Six volunteer personnel from the local associations of Bayreuth, Selb, Ingolstadt, Aschaffenburg, Freising, and Simbach have been members of THW Bavaria for over 70 years.
The THW became a federal agency in 1953, and since then, it has been involved in the largest logistics operation in its history, procuring aid goods worth over 138 million euros at the request of the federal government. As the THW looks to the future, it continues to adapt its focus to meet the changing needs of the world.
In the 1950s, there were only around 20 local associations in THW Bavaria with approximately 1,000 volunteer personnel and a few professional staff. Today, the THW in Bavaria is a testament to the power of volunteerism and the enduring spirit of service. Otto Lummitzsch, the founder and first director of the THW, would no doubt be proud of the organisation's growth and impact.
