Celebrating 75 Years of Service: The THW Bavaria Marks Its Anniversary
The Technical Relief Organization (THW) in Bavaria is celebrating its 75th anniversary, a testament to the dedication and hard work of its volunteers over the decades.
Originally founded on August 22, 1950, by Gustav Heinemann and Otto Lummitzsch, the THW was established to protect the population from the effects of war and clear up after World War II. Today, the organization has grown significantly, with around 16,000 volunteers dedicating their free time to protect the population in Bavaria.
This growth is evident when comparing the number of volunteers today to the 1,000 volunteers in the 1950s. The THW in Bavaria has become a vital part of the community, with 111 local associations across the region. Nuremberg, founded in 1950 as one of the first nationwide, is among the oldest local associations.
The THW's role has evolved over the years, adapting to changing global political situations. The civil defense capabilities of the THW have gained significance due to Russia's aggressive war on Ukraine. The THW has procured aid goods worth over 138 million euros on behalf of the federal government for Ukraine, including vehicles, construction machinery, and power generators.
The THW's work extends beyond Bavaria and Germany. In 2023, Bavarian THW forces rebuilt destroyed bridges, cleared stream beds, and restored roads in Slovenia after heavy rainfall for over two weeks. Similarly, in Turkey, after a severe earthquake in the same year, the THW Bavaria provided on-site support by searching and rescuing buried people and ensuring power supply.
The THW is a sought-after supporter for fire departments, police, aid organizations, and others, and is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government for technical and logistical assistance. The THW in Bavaria has special forces for foreign deployments, including treating contaminated drinking water and pumping out large volumes of water using high-performance pumps.
Six volunteer personnel from the local associations of Bayreuth, Selb, Ingolstadt, Aschaffenburg, Freising, and Simbach have been members of THW Bavaria for over 70 years. A reception for around 350 THW members is being hosted by the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich to mark this jubilee.
The THW became a federal agency in 1953 after receiving an establishment decree from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Today, the THW is the federal volunteer emergency organization, with a commitment of over 80,000 volunteers nationwide. The THW's work continues, with its volunteers always ready to lend a helping hand when disaster strikes.
