In the heart of Germany, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport has been facing a series of challenges recently, with passengers missing their flights and the airport staff bearing the brunt of the frustration. The Stuttgart Regional Government Administration, responsible for security checks at the airport, has outsourced the task to an external service provider due to these issues.

The current problems with security personnel are attributed to a lack of staff and an overloaded multi-shift system, according to the Verdi trade union. This situation has led to slow pace at the security checkpoints, contributing to the delays and missed flights.

On Midweek, approximately 120 passengers missed their flights, with destinations including Porto and London. The airport operator confirmed the issues but stated it is not responsible for the security area.

The new service provider, WISAG, is expected to start handling security controls at the airport from mid-April 2025. The Stuttgart Regional Government Administration is discussing risk-minimizing measures with the service provider, including ensuring sufficient staffing during early shifts.

However, the situation at the airport has been far from smooth sailing. Repeated absences due to illness among security staff have been a problem, and the dismissal of the works council chairman has unsettled the staff.

Despite these challenges, Sebastian Mießler and his mother, who recently failed the security check at the airport, remain undeterred from flying. The incident did not deter Sebastian from his travel plans, demonstrating a resilience in the face of adversity.

In the past, similar issues with the security check at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport were resolved in the second half of the previous year. A new tendering process for passenger controls is underway by the Stuttgart Regional Council, with a decision expected by the end of the month.

Verdi is demanding an improvement in the situation for employees at the airport, advocating for a more supportive and well-staffed working environment. As the situation at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the day-to-day operations and the overall experience for passengers.
