Berliant's Journey: Evolution from Professional to Academic, Leading to Peru

Dr. Marc Berliant: A Life Dedicated to Medicine and Community

Dr. Marc Berliant, a distinguished figure in the medical community, has had a diverse and impactful career. His journey began in Deerfield, a suburb of Chicago, where his childhood experiences shaped his interest in medicine.

Berliant attended the University of Illinois in Chicago for his undergraduate studies, and later, he earned his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. During his time in medical school, Berliant worked part-time at a steel mill's medical department in Indiana, gaining a unique perspective on industrial health.

Berliant's passion for medicine was not the only driving force in his life. His parents, focused on community involvement and advocating for civil rights, made a significant impact. Eleanor Roosevelt even visited the Berliant home in Deerfield due to their advocacy efforts. This upbringing instilled in Berliant a commitment to social justice, which would later manifest in his work.

Berliant's interest in global health led him to take a group of residents on trips to a clinic in the Amazon. The clinic was located in a village that required crossing a river in a makeshift boat. Berliant and the residents treated patients in a schoolhouse, partnering with local physicians.

Berliant's career has been marked by numerous achievements. He spent over 20 years in private practice, returned to our medical centre as a professor of Medicine, and was named division chief of General Medicine. He currently serves as vice-chair for Clinical Programs in the department of Medicine.

Despite his busy schedule, Berliant finds time for relaxation. He and his family spend time at their cottage on Keuka lake, where they enjoy activities such as biking, sailing, and kayaking. Berliant also shares a common hobby with his colleague, Dr. Paul Levy, M.D. - fly fishing. They often embark on adventures in Montana, the Bahamas, and local streams.

Berliant is a family man, married to Margie, and they have four children, Matthew, Kate, Annie, and Emily. He is also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren.

Dr. Marc Berliant's life story is a testament to a well-rounded individual with a variety of experiences. His commitment to medicine, social justice, and community involvement continues to inspire those around him.
