New Electric Bus Depot in Berlin to Revolutionise Public Transport

The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has embarked on an exciting new project, constructing a state-of-the-art electric bus depot in Säntisstraße. This new facility, slated for completion in 2027, is set to redefine the benchmark for future projects and serve as a milestone in securing Berlin's connection to the future.

The new depot will be the first in the BVG network to utilise an automated management system for vehicle deployment, parking, charging, and maintenance. It will accommodate around 220 battery-electric buses, marking the first new depot in over 60 years for the BVG.

The facility will boast two workshop halls, an administration building, loading bridges, and dedicated high-power chargers. Buses at the depot will be charged automatically via roof-mounted pantographs. The depot will also provide parking for staff in an underground garage and serve as a workplace for around 180 employees.

In addition to the new depot, the BVG is installing charging infrastructure at up to 36 terminal stops across the city. This initiative is part of the BVG's ambitious plan to transition to an entirely emission-free fleet in the early 2030s. By 2027, the BVG expects to have around 500 electric buses, constituting about one-third of its fleet of 1,500 vehicles.
