Beware of pseudonymous law enforcement officers making contact

The Police Inspectorate Anklam has issued a warning about ongoing phone scams in the regions of Vorpommern-Greifswald and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. The scammers are posing as police officers and making calls to residents, inquiring about sums of money, valuable jewelry, or other assets.

On August 15, 2025, four incidents of phone scams involving alleged police officers occurred in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. In two cases, the scammers were unsuccessful, but managed to steal money from two elderly victims in another two cases. The same pattern was seen in the Müritz region of the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, where two incidents were reported on August 17, 2025. However, no personal identity details of the perpetrators were reported; the fraudsters remained unknown.

In two other cases in the same district, the scammers managed to steal a total of 24,000 euros from two elderly victims. Fortunately, no damage was caused in the cases reported in the Müritz region, as well as in the two cases reported in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, where the elderly women, aged 74 and 81, did not fall for the scam.

The scammers often cite theft rings, burglars, or general criminals operating in the respective neighborhoods of the call recipients as reasons for these inquiries. The Police Inspectorate Anklam is urging residents to be vigilant and cautious when receiving such calls.
