Bicyclist meets with accident due to car door encounter

In Bielefeld, Germany, a 61-year-old cyclist was involved in a "Dooring" accident on Monday afternoon, September 1, 2025. The incident occurred at 17:15 on Weststraße, where a 25-year-old woman from Bielefeld parked her Mini Cooper S.

The cyclist collided with the car door opened by the driver, resulting in minor injuries. The cyclist was transported to a hospital by ambulance. The car also sustained minor damage.

The police remind drivers to use the "Dutch Reach" when exiting a car to prevent "dooring" incidents. The method involves opening the car door with your right hand, turning your upper body, and looking directly behind you.

Cyclists are also advised to maintain a minimum safety distance of one meter when passing parked or stationary cars. Passengers are encouraged to use their left hand to automatically turn towards the rear when exiting a car.
