Bike enthusiasts across Germany can now access the German Railways' cycling app nationwide.
The DB Rad+ app, developed by Deutsche Bahn, is now available nationwide, offering a new dimension to sustainable travel and bicycle infrastructure planning. This innovative app is compatible with both iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded for free without registration.
Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Senator of Hamburg's Ministry of Transport, sees the app as a valuable foundation for the mobility transition. Similarly, Dr. Caroline Lodemann, Federal Managing Director of the General German Bicycle Club, views the app as helpful for bicycle-friendly traffic planning. Ralf Thieme, DB InfraGO's Board Member, aims to encourage sustainable travel and improve local bicycle infrastructure.
The DB Rad+ app counts and stores the kilometers traveled by cyclists for a kilometer credit. Users can redeem these credits directly with partners via the app's payment function. In addition, cyclists can donate their anonymized mobility data across Germany to help expand bicycle infrastructure where it's most needed.
In cities like Berlin and Hamburg, anonymized data from the DB Rad+ app is used for strategic bicycle infrastructure planning. For instance, it helps place counting stations and evaluate cycle lanes. Cities like Wiesbaden integrate the app’s data into their digital planning tools to improve local cycle routes.
Moreover, in Hamburg, the app is used for strategic location planning of bicycle counters. Meanwhile, in Berlin, the app is used to evaluate the acceptance of new infrastructure, such as protected bicycle lanes. Municipalities receive detailed insights about traffic flows, usage frequencies, and turning behavior at intersections through the DB Rad+ app's analysis tool.
Users of DB Rad+ have collected an impressive 35 million bicycle kilometers in cooperating partner municipalities. As a token of appreciation, participants can receive rewards for donating data, such as vouchers or coffee at the station.

DB is expanding its services around cycling at train stations, including the Bike+Ride Offensive, Info Point Cycling Parking, and Competence Center Station Forecourt and Connected Mobility. With the DB Rad+ app, Deutsche Bahn is not just promoting sustainable travel, but also contributing to smarter and more efficient bicycle infrastructure planning.
