Bill passes through House of Representatives, contributing to the route for military veterans in the trucking industry
The House of Representatives recently passed the "Transport Jobs Act," a significant piece of legislation aimed at easing the transition of military veterans into supply chain jobs, including the trucking industry.
The bill's proponents argue that veterans, with their unique training and mission-focused background, struggle to find meaningful employment post-military service. The Transport Jobs Act is designed to address this issue by tearing down roadblocks that stand between veterans and jobs in the economy.
The three-year project directs the Transportation Secretary to consult with various stakeholders, including the transportation supply chain industry, modal transportation supply chain employers, and organisations representing modal transportation supply chain employees. The Secretary is tasked with developing a plan that includes policy recommendations to eliminate these barriers.
The plan, known as the "Veteran to Supply Chain Action Plan," will also focus on enhancing training, mentorship, education, and advancement programs for veterans in the supply chain sector.
The Transport Jobs Act also mandates the Secretary of Transportation to work with other federal agencies to develop a plan to address barriers to hiring veterans in trucking, rail, shipping, and other critical infrastructure roles.
In a related development, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration launched a pilot program in 2019 to consider allowing drivers with military trucking experience to drive commercially in interstate commerce at the age of 18, 19, or 20. However, this pilot program was cancelled in 2021 due to lack of interest from the intended participants.
U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten introduced the Transport Jobs Act in May, and it was co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett. The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration, with the aim of supporting both veterans and the nation's supply chain.
Interestingly, medium-sized transport and logistics companies in Germany's transport industry have been consulted in connection with the Transport Jobs Act to support the recruitment of veterans into the sector. Medium-sized companies form a significant part of the German logistics and transport industry, which is one of the largest economic sectors with a turnover of around 327 billion euros in 2023.
As the Transport Jobs Act moves forward, it promises to make a significant impact on the lives of veterans and the supply chain industry.
