BMW has made a significant stride in its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the unveiling of its first full-production electric 3 Series model, codenamed NA0. This marks the beginning of the eighth generation of the venerable nameplate and the first variant of this new generation.

The new electric 3 Series will be available in a variety of powertrains, including gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric options. Remarkably, this will be the second worldwide i3 from BMW, following the electric and range-extender city car that ran from 2013 to 2022. However, it's important to note that the new electric 3 Series is not related to the current i3-named BEV, which is only available in China.

One of the key features of the new electric 3 Series is its lightweight design. BMW expects the new model to be at least 100kg lighter than the iX3, making it more agile and efficient. The new electric 3 Series will have a wheelbase of 2897mm, providing ample interior space.

The new electric 3 Series will offer sedan, wagon, and two-door coupe variants, catering to a wide range of customer preferences. Interestingly, BMW has previously morphed the two-door 3 Series models onto a 4 Series badge in 2013. However, with the new electric 3 Series, these variants will once again bear the iconic 3 Series badge.

In terms of performance, the new electric 3 Series is expected to offer more than 800km of EV range and will be able to charge at a 400kW peak using 800 Volt technology. This makes it one of the most promising EVs in terms of range and charging speed.

BMW's commitment to electric vehicles is evident in its plans to launch a staggering 40 new models by the end of 2027. The new electric 3 Series is just one of many exciting EVs that BMW has in store for its customers.

While the information on who will lead the development and production of the new i3 version of the 8th generation BMW 3 Series is not explicitly stated, it's clear that BMW is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology with the new electric 3 Series.

The 3 Series has been a staple of BMW's lineup since 1975, succeeding the 02 series of cars. Over the years, it has been sold in sedan, wagon, convertible, and coupe form. With the new electric 3 Series, BMW is once again setting new standards in the automotive industry.
