Boat accident in Nigeria claims numerous lives
In a heartbreaking incident, a boat accident in Nigeria's north-central Niger State has claimed at least 29 lives, with the death toll potentially reaching as high as 60. The boat was carrying over 100 passengers and sank near Gausawa community in Borgu Local Government Area.
The boat was heading towards Dugga when it collided with a submerged tree stump and subsequently sank around 11 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) previously issued a statement about the incident.
According to reports, the boat departed from Tungan Sule in the Malale district. The overloading and poor maintenance of the vessel are believed to have contributed to the accident.
The SEMA has launched a search and rescue operation, and so far, 50 people have been rescued. However, two people are still unaccounted for.
This tragic incident is just the latest in a series of boat accidents that occur frequently on Nigeria's busy river networks. Failure to comply with safety norms is a common cause of these accidents.
