Boiler ban controversy: Spare a thought for pigs – an appeal for compassion
In the city of Witten, a nature educator and forest guide named Christian Fuchs has been advocating for changes in the tradition of New Year's fireworks. Fuchs is concerned about the impact of fireworks on animals, the environment, and public safety, particularly the use of loud "Chinese crackers."
However, the city of Witten has rejected a general ban on New Year's fireworks, citing legal feasibility as the main reason. Instead, the city is considering local restrictions or fireworks-free zones, such as around Kemnader See or Hohenstein.
Fuchs argues that the tradition of chasing away old "bad spirits" with fireworks is being reconsidered, and he encourages everyone to consider environmental and climate protection, as well as animal welfare, when deciding on fireworks usage.
The city's decision primarily concerns New Year's fireworks, and it does not include a ban on colorful fireworks. Fuchs' proposal does not address fireworks usage outside of New Year's either.
Fuchs believes this compromise would balance tradition with animal protection, environment, and public safety. He also emphasises that individuals should decide for themselves how much they spend on fireworks.
Interestingly, the Netherlands has already decided to ban New Year's fireworks in some municipalities or establish fireworks-free zones. Many German municipalities also have different opinions on restricting fireworks for New Year's Eve. Some implement strict local bans to protect historical buildings, animals, and reduce noise stress, especially for pets. For example, in Nordfriesland, many communities have strict regulations or total bans on fireworks in certain areas to protect reed roofs and animals, making them quiet zones for the holiday. Others see the reduced use of private fireworks as beneficial for safety and the environment, with growing public support for restrictions to protect humans, animals, and nature.
The city of Witten's decision does not seem to be influenced by any specific danger or emergency situation. It's a topic that continues to spark debate and consideration for change as we approach another New Year's Eve.
