Border Control Discovers 12,000 Cigarettes in Traveler's Luggage - Inspections at HZA-UL Border

A 23-year-old Latvian citizen is under investigation for a suspected tax evasion case in Germany. The incident took place near Lindau, and the woman was found with approximately 12,000 cigarettes in her suitcase on a train.

The Ulm Main Customs Office is responsible for the case, and the responsible authority for further pursuing the case is the customs office in Friedrichshafen. The cigarettes were partly marked with Polish tax stamps and partly from duty-free shops.

During the inspection, the woman claimed that the entire amount was for her own consumption. However, her statement was not entirely believed by the officials, leading to the initiation of a tax evasion procedure.

The case was initially handed over to the customs office in Friedrichshafen, and it has since been further pursued at that same office. The Friedrichshafen Customs Office is located near Sigmarszell, as indicated by customs activities reported in that region.

The cigarettes are no longer in the passenger's possession, and the estimated tobacco tax for the confiscated cigarettes amounts to around 2,500 euros. Due to having hardly any cash, the woman was asked to pay in writing.

The Ulm Main Customs Office can be contacted at 0731/9648-1000, [email protected], or www.zoll.de for more information regarding this case. The investigation is ongoing, and the outcome of the tax evasion procedure against the woman remains to be seen.
