Border Wall between Thailand and Cambodia Needs Definitive Marking

The Thai government is considering the construction of a permanent border wall between Thailand and Cambodia, following a series of recent incidents along the border. The proposal was first made by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Songwit Noonpakdee in response to tensions in the Sa Kaeo province.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, has stated that a permanent wall can only be built once both countries' territorial boundaries are clearly demarcated. This sentiment was echoed by Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party and former army chief, who endorsed the idea of a border wall.

Gen Prawit claimed he initiated the idea of a permanent border wall during his tenure as First Army Region commander. He emphasized the need to defend every inch of Thai soil and ensure lasting safety for people along the border. However, his endorsement does not address the issue of where territorial boundaries are unclear, which was a point of concern raised by Mr Phumtham.

Where boundaries are clear, construction is feasible, according to Mr Phumtham. However, building a permanent structure in disputed areas could exacerbate tensions, as per Mr Phumtham's statement. Where territorial boundaries are unclear, dialogue must proceed first, he added.

The territorial boundaries between Thailand and Cambodia were most recently clearly demonstrated or marked around the area of the Preah Vihear temple, where the border conflict was addressed and relations improved, although tensions and security concerns remain possible at this site.

The latest incident that has exacerbated tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border is a landmine blast in Surin, which injured a sixth Thai soldier. Gen Prawit called for urgent action from the government, speaking after this incident.

The idea of a permanent border wall has been discussed previously, with Gen Songwit Noonpakdee's initial proposal. The construction of such a wall would aim to address ongoing border tensions and ensure the safety of Thai citizens living near the border. However, the feasibility and potential implications of such a project are still under discussion.
