Borderlands 4 Updates: What's Known So Far About Gearbox's Next Co-op First-Person Shooter Game

Borderlands 4, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular looter-shooter series, is set to release on September 12, 2025. The game takes players to a new planet called Kairos, a hidden world that has remained a galaxy-wide secret until now.

The story of Borderlands 4 revolves around the villain The Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates Kairos with mind-control implants. Players will take on the role of Vault Hunters, battling against The Timekeeper's forces to restore freedom to the planet.

Gearbox has designed Borderlands 4 to make the player and the vault hunters the central characters of the story. The world is reactive, and the humor is situational, ensuring an immersive and engaging experience for players.

In Borderlands 4, Repkits are the new way to heal. These Repkits can apply bonuses when you heal, such as reducing Action Skill cooldown. Guns in Borderlands 4 can spawn with parts from multiple manufacturers, including Order, Ripper, Daedalus, and the returning favorites like Tediore, Maliwan, and Jakobs.

Enhancements have replaced Artifacts in Borderlands 4, awarding bonuses to guns according to their manufacturer(s). Loot drop rates have also been revised for a more balanced and exciting loot experience.

Borderlands 4 features dynamic weather and events on the new planet Kairos, providing a varied and immersive gaming environment. The game also includes several new activities on the map, such as Silos, and a variety of enemy types, including floating wardens with big hats, mechanical martial artists, and badass dudes in golden armor.

Grenades and heavy weapons no longer need ammo in Borderlands 4, making combat more fluid and action-packed. Each player in a co-op party can set their own difficulty level, ensuring a challenging experience for all players.

Vaults of legends can be opened by using vault key fragments in Borderlands 4, offering players the chance to uncover powerful and unique loot. Players also have a customizable personal hoverbike called a DigiRunner, providing fast and exciting travel across the planet.

Borderlands 4 also includes a replay feature, allowing players to re-do missions and boss fights without loading an old save. Gearbox has released several trailers for Borderlands 4 throughout 2024 and 2025, each revealing more about the game's story, characters, and gameplay.
