In a moving turn of events, Tunisia has announced its submission for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, titled "The Voice of Hind Rajab." The film, directed by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, is poised to make a significant impact on the global film scene.

Ben Hania, known for her unique blend of documentary and fiction, has previously gained recognition with her films Four Daughters and The Man Who Sold His Skin, both of which were Oscar contenders. The latest addition to her repertoire promises to be equally impactful.

The film is set in Gaza and features real voice recordings between six-year-old Hind Rajab and Red Crescent volunteers. Tragically, Hind was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza City in January 2024. After 12 days of lost contact, her body, along with those of several family members, was found in their car in Gaza's Tal al-Hawa neighborhood.

The poignant story of Hind Rajab has resonated deeply with a host of Hollywood luminaries. Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Brad Pitt, Jonathan Glazer, and Alfonso Cuarรณn have joined as executive producers for the film, having been impressed by a recent cut of the film. Besides these heavyweights, journalist-turned-producer Jemima Khan, Canadian businessman and former Lionsgate founder Frank Giustra, and jewelry designer and socialite Sabine Getty have also joined the production team.

The Hollywood stars' involvement in the film has added an extra layer of anticipation. The film is set to premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, with Venice Film Festival head Alberto Barbera expressing his belief that "The Voice of Hind Rajab" will be among the most impressive films at the festival.

Following its Venice premiere, "The Voice of Hind Rajab" will make its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film will also screen at the San Sebastian, Busan, and London film festivals this fall.

The tragic incident that sparked the film has also sparked global protests, including at Columbia University where Hamilton Hall was renamed Hind's Hall in her honour. "The Voice of Hind Rajab" promises to be a powerful and moving tribute to a young life lost too soon, and a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict.
