Sehir Hatlari, the main operator of these white ferries, has been operating for almost two centuries, carrying at least 40 million passengers a year. Ibrahim Bayus, a 62-year-old engineer, shares memories of the familiarity of these ferries from his childhood.

The Pasabahce ferry mainly sails the 20-minute route between the Asian district of Kadikoy and Besiktas on the European side. Until 1973, the only way to cross between Istanbul's Asian and European sides was by boat.
