Bridges for pedestrians and cyclists strengthening active transportation options in Leeds
The city of Leeds has seen a significant transformation with the opening of three new footbridges at Armley Gyratory, as part of a £41.96m project aimed at improving routes for pedestrians and cyclists. This project, funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority via the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund, has been delivered with the vision of building a better-connected region for everyone, as stated by the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin.
The changes to the gyratory have not only increased the capacity for vehicles but have also led to improved traffic flow and less congestion. The improvements have been instrumental in enhancing safety for all road users, making it easier and safer to walk and cycle on one of the city's busiest routes.
The project connects Wortley and Holbeck to the city center, offering improved active travel options in Leeds. The footbridges are part of a larger infrastructure project that includes highways works to the main gyratory, which were completed in winter 2023. Work on demolishing the existing footbridges began in January 2024.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards will recognise achievements and innovations in active travel on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. For more information about the CiTTi Awards, visit www.cittiawards.co.uk.
The improvements have resulted in more accessible routes for pedestrians and cyclists, making it an attractive option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their health through active travel. The project is a testament to the commitment of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to creating a more sustainable and connected region.
