The European Union's foreign ministers are set to discuss potential new sanctions against Israel and Hamas at a meeting in Copenhagen on Saturday. The discussion follows calls for action from Sweden and the Netherlands, and the UK government's stance against Israel's escalating military operations in Gaza.

In a significant move, the UK government has decided not to invite Israeli government representatives to attend DSEI UK 2025, a major London arms fair in September. This decision comes in response to Israel's intensified military operations in the Gaza Strip. The UK Ministry of Defence stated that no Israeli government delegation would be invited due to this decision, which it deemed wrong.

However, Israeli defense companies are still allowed to participate, as the exclusion specifically targets official government representatives, not commercial firms. This decision has been met with criticism from the Israeli defense ministry, which has reacted furiously and announced its withdrawal from DSEI UK 2025.

The UK government's stance against Israel's military operations in Gaza is not new. It has already suspended arms export licenses to Israel for use in Gaza and sanctioned two far-right Israeli ministers in protest at Israel's conduct of the war. Additionally, the UK government has called for a diplomatic solution to end the conflict, including an immediate ceasefire, the return of hostages, and a surge in humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

France has previously taken similar action, blocking access to the stands of several Israeli arms manufacturers at the Paris Air show for displaying "offensive weapons."

No specific new sanctions have been mentioned in the UK's response to Israel's conduct of the war in Gaza. The UK government has also not provided new details about its belief that Israel's decision to further escalate its military operation in Gaza is wrong. Similarly, no further details about the suspended free trade talks with Israel have been provided.

The Israeli government has labeled the UK's decision to ban their representatives as "discrimination." Despite this, the UK government continues to advocate for a diplomatic solution to end the war in Gaza. The European Union foreign ministers are expected to discuss possible new sanctions against both Israel and Hamas at their meeting in Copenhagen this weekend.
