Delivery worker in Bucharest physically attacked by individual; same suspect under scrutiny for disseminating far-right symbols on the internet

Bucharest resident under investigation for both physical assault on an Asian delivery worker and online distribution of fascist symbols.

In Bucharest on August 26, a shocking incident occurred that has sparked outrage across Romania. A Bangladeshi food delivery worker was allegedly attacked by an unidentified man, who reportedly struck him in the face and called him an "invader."

The attacker, who is already under preventive arrest for racially motivated violence, acted with the intent to intimidate and drive the victim out of the country. The assault took place in Bucharest's District 2. The Bangladeshi worker suffered minor injuries that required up to two days of medical care.

The video of the assault, filmed by the attacker himself, gained widespread attention after being posted online by a former police officer named Marian Godină. The material was made publicly accessible and not restricted by any viewing settings.

The video shows the far-right symbols, the Legionary Movement's emblem, and an image of Adolf Hitler, indicating that the incident is not an isolated case of racism. The man is now facing an additional investigation for spreading fascist and racist imagery online.

President Nicusor Dan denounced the incident as an "intolerable act of xenophobic violence." He said, "Anyone living and working here deserves protection and equal treatment." Dan added, "It is not hate that defines us Romanians, but solidarity, hospitality, and tolerance."

Dan's sentiments were echoed by the authorities and the public. The assault sparked a wave of condemnation, with many expressing their disgust and disappointment at such behaviour.

However, there was a glimmer of hope in the story. An off-duty police officer, Andrei Jianu, intervened during the confrontation. Jianu, having just finished his shift, ran after the suspect and with the help of colleagues, managed to restrain him.

The investigation is ongoing, and the name of the attacker has not been publicly disclosed. But one thing is certain: such behaviour undermines the values of solidarity and tolerance that Romania and its people stand for. The authorities have confirmed that the assault is being treated as racially motivated, and anyone found guilty will be held accountable for their actions.
