Bus journeys utilizing experimental routes planned between Latvia and Estonia
The Baltic region is set for a significant change in transportation as two new bus routes are scheduled to open on the 1st of July. These routes, which are a continuation of the existing Pērnava-Ikla route, will connect the Latvian border region with Estonia's fourth largest city, Pärnu, and potentially extend further to Limbaži and even Cēsis.
The Ikla-Ainaži-Salacgrīva route, as it will be known, has garnered interest from various parties. Andris Zunde, head of the Salacgrīva Association in Limbaži Municipality, has expressed enthusiasm, stating that the new route offers a cheaper alternative to travelling by car.
The Road Transport Directorate is a partner in this process and will ensure the routes remain viable after the project. Lelde Ābele, project manager for the Vidzeme planning region, emphasised the importance of the route for the people of Valka who work in Valga and use public transport.
The routes are expected to restore public transport between the twin towns of Valka and Valga, with the new route running three times a day. After a 12-month trial period, the routes will be evaluated to see if they are popular with passengers.
Suggestions have been made to extend the routes to other cities, as discussed with the Estonians. The potential extension of the route may also include Cēsis. Residents can look forward to having access to information on bus timetables, ticket purchase options, and available discounts before the routes open.
The project manager Ābele will evaluate whether to include these routes in Latvia's public transport network. Possible partners involved in the expansion of the mentioned bus routes could include the bus manufacturer KARSAN, technology provider ADASTEC, the public transport operator USTRA, and the Bundesministerium für Vertransport (Federal Ministry of Transport), as they are mentioned in context with the current autonomous bus test project in Hannover, which could be extended in phases.
This exciting development promises to make travel between Latvia and Estonia more accessible and affordable, potentially paving the way for increased cultural and economic exchange between the two countries. Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
