Cagliari Falls to Napoli in a Tight Finish: Anguissa Grabs Decisive Victory for Title Holders
In a thrilling Saturday night clash, Napoli extended their unbeaten streak in Serie A to an impressive 19 games, the longest in the big five European leagues. The head coach of Napoli, Antonio Conte, started the title defence in the 2025-26 season with a victory as they overcame Cagliari.
The second half belonged to Napoli, who dominated the proceedings, accumulating 1.7 expected goals (xG) from 20 shots. Frank Anguissa scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner, assisted by Alessandro Buongiorno, to secure all three points for the hosts.
Cagliari, however, caused their own problems by attempting to play out from the back, leading to several opportunities for Napoli. Michael Folorunsho missed a good chance for Cagliari against the run of play, while Anguissa and Buongiorno had earlier missed opportunities in the game.
Scott McTominay, who scored the title-winning goal in this exact fixture last season, took the most shots (five) in this match but failed to find the back of the net. The midfielder did, however, record the most touches in the box (10) during the game and had the most shots on target (two).
Elia Caprile, the Cagliari goalkeeper, made several saves to keep his team in the game, but ultimately, Napoli's relentless pressure paid off.
Napoli are unbeaten in their last 14 Serie A games, with their last defeat being against Como in February. The team's current nine-win, five-draw streak in the league has seen them continue their perfect start to the title defence.
Matteo Politano had a shot that landed on the roof of the net, while McTominay completed 80.8% of his passes in a controlled midfield performance.
As the season progresses, Napoli will look to build on this impressive start and challenge for the Serie A title once again under the guidance of Antonio Conte.
