Calgary Stampeders Dominate Elks despite Subdued Offensive Performance (and eight other perspectives)
In the highly anticipated Labour Day Classic game in Calgary, the Stampeders emerged victorious against the Edmonton Elks with a score of 28-7. This annual match is considered more significant than any other regular-season game, representing a competition for sports supremacy and government spending between the two cities.
The Stampeders' defence had a standout performance, limiting the Elks' quarterback, Cody Fajardo, to his lowest yardage total and completion percentage since he became the starter. They also recorded four sacks, a testament to their relentless pursuit. An offside call on an Elks defender erased the one sack that Vernon Adams Jr., the Elks' quarterback, took during the game.
Despite Adams Jr.'s poor performance, with 162 passing yards and 13 completions on 23 attempts, the Elks' offence struggled to gain momentum. The Stampeders largely contained the Elks' running back, Justin Rankin, who managed only 48 yards on 13 carries. The Stampeders' offensive line, led by Chris Fortin, the first-round draft pick at centre, ensured Adams Jr. remained unscathed throughout the game, resulting in a clean sheet for them.
The Stampeders' offence also shone, with Dedrick Mills delivering a season-high rushing performance of 106 yards. Mills also scored a two-point conversion and is tied for the most rushing touchdowns in the league with eight. Erik Brooks sealed the game with an impressive 86-yard punt return touchdown.
The Stampeders' defence also forced two fumbles, both in the red zone, to prevent any momentum for the Elks. Solomon Elimimian, a first-ballot Hall of Fame linebacker, made his debut for the Stampeders in the game, contributing four tackles. Dominique Rhymes and Derrick Moncrief, who played their 100th career CFL game in the match, also contributed to the win, with Rhymes scoring a touchdown and Moncrief recording three defensive tackles.
The Stampeders' defence's performance should improve their rankings in forcing fumbles and recovering them. Dave Dickenson, the head coach and general manager of the Stampeders, plans to work in Elimimian slowly over time. This victory marks a promising start for both the team and their new addition.
