Campsites in NRW remain closed - Gastro NRW shows signs of weakness
In the heart of Germany, the city of Neuss offers a rich tapestry of social developments, culinary arts, art, and culture. However, the hospitality sector in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), which forms a significant part of this vibrant city's economy, has been hit hard by the ongoing pandemic.
According to the latest figures, companies in the hospitality sector experienced a real revenue decline of 83.4% in February 2021 compared to the same month in 2020. This decline was particularly noticeable in beverage-oriented gastronomy, where real sales fell by 75.1%, but surprisingly showed a 12.3% increase compared to the previous month.
The employment situation in the beverage-oriented gastronomy sector was exceptionally dire, with a decline of 53.3% in the number of employees. The overall employment in the NRW hospitality industry was 28.3% lower in February 2021 than in the same month a year ago.
The hotel industry also felt the brunt of the pandemic, with sales 83.4% lower than in February 2020. However, there was a glimmer of hope as sales increased by 8.0% compared to the previous month. The same trend was observed in gastronomy companies, which recorded sales 59.3% lower than a year ago, but showed a 0.3% increase compared to January 2021.
Despite the challenging times, the first two months of 2021 saw a real decrease in sales of 65.5% and a nominally decrease of 64.3% compared to the same period in 2020.
However, there was a positive development in the camping sector, with sales increasing by 29.3% in real terms and 32.6% nominally in February 2022 compared to the same month in 2021.
