Canadian borders saw a higher influx of American visitors compared to Canadian travelers in June, according to available data.
In June 2025, travel patterns between Canada and the United States underwent a significant shift, with a notable decline in foreign residents visiting Canada and a drop in travel to the U.S. by Canadians.
Foreign residents visiting Canada saw a 3.9% decrease in June 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. U.S. air arrivals in Canada dropped 0.6%, while Canadians' travel to other destinations increased. Interestingly, Canadian residents returned from 2.1 million trips to the United States, a 28.7% decrease from the same month the previous year.
This trend was reciprocated, as U.S. residents' trips to Canada accounted for 79.2% of all non-resident trips to Canada in June 2025, a decrease from the same period in 2024. U.S. residents took 2.7 million trips to Canada, a 5.8% decrease from the same month in 2024. Fewer Americans are driving into Canada, with a 8.9% decrease in Americans arriving by car.
Conversely, Canadians are driving less into the United States, with a 32.3% decrease in Canadians returning from the U.S. by car. Canadians returning from the U.S. by air dropped 15.7% in June 2025. However, the number of Canadians returning from overseas increased by 2.7%, while the number of Canadians returning from abroad overall increased by 6.9% compared to the same month in 2024.
The four most frequent countries of origin of foreigners who traveled to Canada in June 2025 are not explicitly listed in the search results. The United Kingdom, India, and France accounted for 28.9% of all overseas arrivals in Canada in June 2025. Intriguingly, in June 2025, more Americans visited Canada than Canadians traveling to the United States.
On a separate note, Canadian Post's latest talks with the union are being postponed, and Hurricane Erin is threatening the U.S. East Coast as it heads northbound, but it is unlikely to impact Atlantic Canada. Notably, Carney announced the removal of Canada's counter-tariffs on U.S. goods under CUSMA.
This is the first time since June 2006, excluding August and September 2021, that this decline in travel between Canada and the United States has occurred. Overall travel between the two countries dropped significantly compared to the same period in 2024.
