Cancellation of the Award Ceremony: Ex-Germany Football Association Captain Gündogan Prior to His Move to Turkey
In a surprising turn of events, it appears that Ilkay Gündogan, the 34-year-old midfielder, is on the brink of joining Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray Istanbul. This move comes as the transfer window for most European countries has already closed, but deals in Turkey can still be finalised until September 12.
Gündogan's transfer to Galatasaray has been the subject of intense speculation in recent days. The midfielder, who has struggled to recapture his former glory at Manchester City, is reportedly set to sign a two-year contract with the Istanbul club.
This potential move could see Gündogan replace or displace players such as Manuel Akanji or other teammates at Manchester City, should he indeed sign for Galatasaray.
Meanwhile, Gündogan's planned move has caused him to cancel an award ceremony in Dusseldorf. The award, the Mevlüde-Genç-Medaille, is given to personalities who promote understanding and tolerance. Gündogan was to be honoured for his efforts in this regard.
The cancellation was due to a potential club change, with Gündogan citing this as the reason for his inability to attend the event, which was scheduled for Tuesday.
Galatasaray's first Champions League match of the season will be against Frankfurt on September 18. The Turkish club will be the final guest of the European champions at Manchester City on January 28, 2026.
Interestingly, Leroy Sané, another high-profile signing for Galatasaray this summer, has already joined the Istanbul club on a free transfer from FC Bayern Munich. Sané is expected to be a teammate of Gündogan at Galatasaray.
Gündogan, a native of Gelsenkirchen, was once a transfer candidate at Manchester City. His move to Galatasaray, if it goes ahead, will mark a new chapter in his career.
