Jaime Munguia, the Mexican boxing star, has been cleared of all wrongdoing following a failed drug test after his victory over Bruno Surace in May. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and United Kingdom Anti-Doping (UKAD) determined that Munguia had unintentionally ingested a banned substance, which was traced back to contaminated dietary supplements.

The initial positive result, which caused a shockwave in the boxing world, was an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. However, after a thorough review of the full record, UKAD reached the same conclusion as the World Boxing Council (WBC) and BBBofC that Munguia did not cheat.

Munguia, who maintains his innocence throughout the process, feels vindicated by the decision. "I am grateful to the WBC, BBBofC, and UKAD for acknowledging my innocence and the truth that the science proves," Munguia said in a statement.

This positive development comes at an opportune time for Munguia, who is expected to return to the ring before the end of the year. The defeat by Surace in May derailed plans for Munguia to face Christian Mbilli in a WBC interim super middleweight clash. However, with the controversy now behind him, Munguia can focus on his upcoming matches.

The first encounter between Munguia and Surace took place in Tijuana, Mexico, in March 2018, where Surace knocked out Munguia in the sixth round. A rematch was made five months later in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the Canelo vs William Scull undercard. In the rematch, Munguia exacted his revenge with a disciplined points victory.

Munguia's career boasts a impressive 45-2 record, with the first loss being an unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in May 2024. The boxer has won both boxing matches against Surace, first in March 2018 by knockout and then in September 2019 by unanimous decision.

As Munguia prepares to step back into the ring, he can do so with a clean slate and the support of the boxing community. The Mexican star is eager to continue his successful career and prove once again why he is one of the best in the sport.
