Car crash leaves one dead and five injured in France's crowded streets
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a tragic incident unfolded in the heart of Evreux, a town with around 50,000 residents in the northern French region of Normandy.
The incident took place outside a wine bar in the centre of town, where a dispute between a young woman and several men had earlier escalated. Following the altercation, the bouncers escorted all patrons outside the bar.
At approximately 4:00 am, local time (GMT +1, 0200), a man reportedly drove his car into the crowd that had gathered outside the bar. The panicked crowd, many of whom were under the influence of alcohol, scattered in all directions.
When the police arrived on the scene, they found one individual dead at the spot, and five others injured, two of whom were critically hurt. The public prosecutor, Remi Coutin, confirmed that there were no terrorist or racist motives behind the incident.
The car driver, along with two others, was taken into custody. The mayor of Evreux, Guy Lefrand, commended the rapid response of the police and emergency services and expressed his sympathies and solidarity with the victims.
It was reported that the bar where the incident occurred should have closed at 1 am. The bar has a reputation for causing disturbances in the past.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further arrests are possible. The authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
