Case begins for individual charged with golf course assassination plan against Trump
In Fort Pierce, Florida, Ryan Routh, a 59-year-old man with a criminal record, is currently on trial for allegedly attempting to shoot former President Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. Routh faces charges including attempted murder, illegal weapons possession, and assault on a federal officer.
Routh, who is representing himself without legal training, denies the accusations. The trial, presided over by Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump during his first term as president, is expected to last between two and four weeks.
The incident occurred on September 15, when a Secret Service agent saw a rifle poking from the bushes on a golf course where Trump was playing. Routh, who fled in a vehicle, was arrested shortly after. The motives behind Routh's actions remain unclear.
Routh has a history of making controversial statements. In a recent court filing, he referred to Trump as a "baboon" and an "idiot." He has also expressed support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, reportedly traveling to Kyiv in an attempt to join foreign volunteer units, although he was rejected due to his age and lack of experience.
Despite these controversies, Judge Cannon granted Routh's request to act as his own attorney in the trial. This decision comes after Routh's public defenders were removed from the case after he refused to meet them. The court has appointed standby counsel for Routh to ensure a fair trial.
Routh's requests for strippers and a golf putting green while in detention were rejected by the court. If convicted, Routh faces life in prison.
It is important to note that Judge Cannon gained national attention when she dismissed charges against a Republican over his hoarding of top secret government documents in his Florida home, but this is not directly related to the trial of Ryan Routh.
The trial is taking place amid heightened security for Trump, following an assassination attempt on July 13. The court has taken measures to ensure the safety of all parties involved.
