Catastrophic earthquake of 6.6 magnitude strikes Nepal, leaving 6 casualties in its wake
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit the region near the Nepal-India border on Wednesday morning. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre initially reported the quake, which was also recorded by the National Facility for Seismology in India as a magnitude of 6.3.
The epicentre of the earthquake was approximately 158 km northeast of Pilibhit, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The quake was felt not only in the surrounding areas but also in India's capital, New Delhi.
The earthquake was videotaped showing three distinct shakes, including two earthquakes and one aftershock, according to the National Seismological Facility of Nepal. Unfortunately, the tremors led to a tragic event in the Doti area of Nepal, where a house collapsed, resulting in the death of six individuals, as reported by Reuters' partner ANI.
Media reports indicate that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. The exact location of the epicentre was not specified in the reports.
Despite the devastating impact, the initial 5.6 magnitude reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre suggests that the earthquake could have been worse. Emergency services are currently working to assess the extent of the damage and provide aid to those affected.
As the situation develops, more information will be made available. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing story.
