Caverion and Stadtwerke Bochum prolong partnership
In the heart of Bochum's Mark 51°7 industrial park, a groundbreaking project is taking shape. The East Energy Hub, a joint venture between Caverion and Bochum Municipal Utilities, is set to revolutionise heat and cooling supply in the area.
The project harnesses the power of mine water from beneath the industrial park. The water, extracted from approximately 800 meters deep, boasts a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for heat supply. For cooling, mine water from around 340 meters deep with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius is utilised.
Heat pumps are employed to bring the mine water to the temperature level required for heat supply in the local heat network. For cooling, installed heat pumps cool the water to the required level, while compression chillers are used to cover peak loads.
A combined heat and power plant provides the electrical energy for the technical systems, ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy solution. Through their expertise in building automation, Caverion Germany optimises the potential of these systems for the East Energy Hub.
The scopes of the collaboration now include ventilation, sanitation, electrical engineering, and building automation. Caverion Germany is responsible for on-site installation of the systems for the East Energy Hub.
The joint goal is to commence supplying heat and cooling to the connected commercially used buildings in spring 2026. No specific information about the nature of the commercially used buildings connected to the East Energy Hub was provided.
This innovative heat and cooling supply system for the East Energy Hub is a testament to Bochum's commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking energy solutions. The city is excited about the potential benefits this project will bring, both in terms of reduced carbon emissions and cost savings for businesses in the Mark 51°7 industrial park.
Caverion Germany, with their extensive experience in heating and cooling engineering, are supporting their client with complementary engineering services for heat and cooling generation concepts. The expansion of their collaboration with Bochum Municipal Utilities is a significant step forward in realising this ambitious project.
The East Energy Hub is planned to be a beacon of sustainability and innovation in Bochum, demonstrating that with the right partnerships and technologies, it is possible to create a more sustainable future for all.
