In a historic move, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hosted the largest Diwali reception ever at the White House on Monday, bringing together members of the most diverse administration in American history.

The celebration, which marks the triumph of good over evil and the welcoming of prosperity and wealth, was attended by numerous Indian Americans from the Biden administration, including President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Diwali, also known as the "festival of lights," is celebrated to commemorate the homecoming of Lord Rama after 14 year-long years in exile and his victory over Ravana. For individuals of Jain belief, it marks the achievement of Bliss or Moksha by Mahavira, the last Tirthankara.

"Diwali is a reminder that each person has the power to bring light to the world," President Biden said during the reception. He thanked the Eastern American community for making Diwali a wonderful part of American society and for their optimism, courage, and empathy demonstrated during the pandemic.

First Lady Jill Biden expressed her gratitude to the Eastern American community for helping light the way ahead. Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black American and South Asian American to become Vice President, stated that the Biden administration joins over 1 billion people worldwide to celebrate Diwali.

The celebration was marked by lights, firecrackers, traditional sweets, and trading gifts. The White House event was a testament to the significance of Diwali in North India, where worshipping of Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi is an important part of the festival, signifying the welcoming of prosperity and wealth.

President Biden also stated that there are more Asian Americans in the United States than ever before. He emphasized the contributions of South Asian Americans to America's recovery from the pandemic, building an economy that works for everyone, and serving and protecting communities.

Vice President Harris reiterated the administration's commitment to inclusivity, stating that the White House is the people's house where every American can celebrate their honor and tradition. The Diwali reception at the White House was a symbol of this commitment, reflecting the soul of the nation and the spirit of unity that Diwali embodies.
