"Celebrating Two Decade Milestone: Caritas hosts a grand summer event marking its 20-year existence"
In the heart of Bergisch Gladbach, the Caritas Senior Center "Mittendrin" at Hauptstraße 249, opposite the Forum Park, has been a beacon of community and support for older residents for the past 20 years. This centre, which is also located in Paffrath, has faced financial challenges since its inception, but the Caritas Association, with around 500 employees and 360 volunteers, has been steadfast in its mission to provide essential services.
Despite the financial difficulties, the future of "Mittendrin" is expected to remain vibrant, and efforts are underway to secure the long-term existence of both institutions. The senior centers, valued for their role in social cohesion, have been a reliable partner for the city of Bergisch Gladbach over the years, and the municipal senior office has been a steadfast supporter.
Recently, Mayor Frank Stein paid tribute to the centres' importance, while Astrid Hagl, the centre's director, welcomed guests at a celebratory event marking the centre's 20th anniversary. The event was capped off with a grand summer festival.
To address the financial challenges, a support association and fundraising campaign were established. In the autumn of 2025, a fundraising campaign will be held, accompanied by the art project "The Radiance of Age." The project, which will have its vernissage on September 3 in the pedestrian zone of Bergisch Gladbach, aims to highlight the beauty and wisdom of aging.
As the centres prepare for reduced opening hours by 2025 due to financial reasons, there is a willingness to explore new paths to secure their future. Talks are underway to establish a support association for the senior centres, a model proven successful in many areas.
"Mittendrin" is more than just a senior centre; it is a place of encounter, where no one feels alone, neighbourhood is lived and shaped, and aging is shared together. It is a hub where older people can find companionship, support, and a sense of belonging.
The Caritas Association for the Rheinisch-Bergisch District e.V. provides around 35 services and facilities, including nine kindergartens. The association values its long-standing and reliable cooperation with the city of Bergisch Gladbach and is committed to continuing its mission of supporting the community's most vulnerable members.
As the centres move forward, they remain committed to their mission of providing a welcoming and supportive environment for older residents. The upcoming fundraising campaign and art project are testament to this commitment and the community's support for these vital institutions.
